I ain't english, but use of soccer for that sport is as moronic as not using Metrication (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metrication). But figures, same country in question.

If you talk about soccer then both americans and brits will understand what you're talking about, as a bonus brits (and possibly the dutch too) will be offended = win.

If you talk about football then some ppl will misunderstand = lose.

Much much worse is that the brits and dutch ppl think hockey is something played on grass..

If you talk about Ice-Hockey then both americans and brits will understand what you're talking about, as a bonus Americans (and possibly the canadians too) will be offended = win.

If you attend a football game in the USA you expect to see a game where people are using their feet to play but get one where they mainly use their hands.

So it should really be called handball, but wait, there is already a sport called that. Confusion once again. Perhaps handball on steroids would be a good name.

The writer, Martin Rogers, used to write about football in the London Daily Mirror but since he moved to LA and became a writer for Yahoo! Sports he of course began using the american term soccer since noone but americans read anything that is posted on Yahoo anyway.
